A Selection of Clyne Heritage Society’s New Archives on Display [Brora] ...

16 June 2016

Starts: 19:30

A selection of Clyne Heritage Society's new archives on display

Brora Heritage Centre (NOTE: NOT Community Centre Lounge, Brora, which is usual venue for society meetings).

Clyne Heritage Society's popular annual Open Archive Evening is to be held at 7.30 on Thursday, June 16th at the Brora Heritage Centre - not the usual Community Centre venue. This favourite event will again feature a selection of items, many of which have never been previously displayed, donated to the Society's Archives, such as artefacts, photographs, documents, maps etc. It is an informal evening, for browsing and chatting about the items on display - and just general socialising!

The Society's high-resolution scanner will be there too, so please bring along any photographs, documents etc which you may have, to be scanned on the night for the archive.

The event will be held in the recently taken over Brora Heriatege Centre on Coalpit Road, Fascally, Brora - follow the signs from the A9 at Brora Bridge. The meeting is open to all and there will be a raffle (donations always welcome). Refreshments and admission are free. Anyone wishing to join the Society will be made most welcome. Information on the Society's activities can be found on its website: www.clyneheritage.com or on its Facebook and Twitter pages.

Talk: A ‘Caledonian resistance’? History and myth in Scotland’s ancient past [Inverness] ...

16 June 2016

Starts: 13:00
Ends: 14:00

A ‘Caledonian resistance’? History and myth in Scotland’s ancient past

Talk by Alan Montgomery

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. Cost £3.50.  Booking is essential, in person at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery, call 01463 237114 or email cait.mccullagh@highlifehighland.com

For centuries Scots have celebrated the fact that they were one of the only nations to have repelled the mighty Roman Empire, proudly boasting of their ancient liberty in patriotic history, poetry and political rhetoric since medieval times. But, as Inverness Museum’s exhibition of Cait3Roman Iron Age collections, Treasures from beyond the frontier demonstrates, relations between Rome and the region now known as Scotland were certainly more complex, and today’s historians are often sceptical of such ideas, one recently describing this much-vaunted independence as nothing more than a ‘fairytale’.

In this talk, Alan Montgomery will look at the development of these tales of Caledonian resistance to Rome, exploring to what extent they were based on historical evidence and revealing how they were influenced by more current concerns regarding Scotland’s sense of national identity through the ages.
